Keep Lossless DNGs if have the space to spare, grumble to myself about keeping DNGs AND ProRes, backing up both over the years, or delete ProRes when I finish the project, if it bothers me that much! NARRATIVE Workflow: D16–>SlimRaw Lossless–>First Light in Resolve–>Export ProRes LT or ProRes for edit Wherever–>Roundtrip back to Resolve for final color, Export. Cross fingers and keep 5:1 as archival, delete original DNG. DOC / high shooting ratio Workflow: D16–> SlimRaw 5:1 Lossy–>edit within Resolve, Export from Resolve. Here the second has the BMD Film to Rec 709 v2 LUT that comes with Resolve with a wipe to show the difference between the plugin’s BMD Film and the LUT. The thing is the numbers on those sliders only update when in Custom mode. You get the normal options for white balance presets and two sliders for temperature and tint. Okay, this part’s a little quirky and is likely to confuse some people. In other words, it doesn’t bring the linear image to scene referred values where middle gray is 0.18, it gives the data as it was recorded. The Sensor RGB transfer function gives the linear data as if you were looking at the uncorrected, linear DNG image. The gamma slider affects only the gamma option. All of these are written according to their official documentation except for BMD Film (4K) which was added from the 12b LUTs included with Resolve. If you own or use an ARRI ALEXA Mini or AMIRA and want to utilize HDE after shooting ARRIRAW it is going to cost you.Again, I tried to get the most common transfer functions. Files, once decoded, are a bit-for-bit perfect match to the original file. Except that with Codex HDE, you can access the original pixel values that were encoded. An uncompressed Bayer pattern image can be reduced to a HDE file size not much larger than a corresponding ProRes 4444 XQ mezzanine file.

Uncompressed RAW data costs more to transport and store than compressed ProRes files. HDE is free-of-charge for use with Codex Capture or Compact Drives, openly shared, and fast. This lowers storage costs, shortens transfer times, and speeds up workflows, which translates to a direct 40% saving in time and money. For good performance, CODEX recommends using a MacBook Pro or Mac Mini from 2018 or later as a minimum specification. HDE is applied during the offload process and performance is governed by available CPU resources.

HDE workflows through Device Manager are available on macOS only and require the use of a compatible copy tool such as Hedge, Offload Manager, Silverstack, Shotput Pro, or YoYotta. To be clear, it doesn’t save any space when you are shooting ARRIRAW, it only has benefits once you start to offload your material.

HDE is enabled through the implementation of a paid license. This saves your initial quality while drastically decreasing storage space and the number of hard drives needed when shooting in ARRIRAW. What this essentially means, is that when you are finished shooting ARRIRAW, you can use any CFast 2.0 card reader (including models with dual card slots and Thunderbolt connections) to then minimize ARRIRAW file sizes by around 40% by utilizing HDE.
